From Jangle pop Ground zero, winston-Salem, N.C.

Thrift Bakery took the route of experimental rock, rap and funk for their first 50 songs

The group has become increasingly melodic over the past decade, drawing upon pop, hyperpop, dance music and some more traditional story ballads.

Thrift Bakery

Beat-driven melodies to make you laugh or cry that you can't find elsewhere.

Thrift Bakery is recording another album after taking a detour to release the dance-oriented record “Immigrant Beats” under the name Loco Domingo in 2025. Spawned from the Winston-Salem. N.C., jangle-pop circuit, Thrift Bakery took the harder route of funk, hip-hop and experimental rock. But they have been known to fall for a hook, chorus and guitar-based melody in recent years. The virtual band is now scattered across the USA. Vocalist Dlux writes on guitar now, and his bandmates gently chide him about how far he has to travel to produce fathomable compositions. Terrie Cloth plays bass, harmonica and other stringed instruments and Bob Hair runs the machines. The three of them sing while long-time collaborator Tater Totts was added in 2012 on guitar. Freshness Test was released in 1988 and remastered in 2024. Mediocre Criminals came out in 2017. The tuneful long-player Transcendent came out in 2020. The 11-track LP Hard & Sweet, released in September 2021, continued to explore directions ranging from hard hip-hop to melodic pop. Forty Years in a Deep Ravine, released in July 2023, also explored street sounds, funk, rap and sadboy genres, among others. Several tracks have been released since then in anticipation of a new album, much of which will be breakup and relationship songs. The group still steers from upbeat, guitar-driven, familiar sounds to experimental but hummable songs.
