Like to shop? Glowing up? Having fun at the mall? So is the rent a cop patrolling there. Dlux of Thrift Bakery desires her so much he got into a relationship with her. They put all this self-care chemistry into their bodies. This is upbeat synth pop that will make you go crazy and cuddle with your loved one, or anybody, or your pet. The song will be on our next album, whenever that is. We promise it will be surreal.

I heard Cape Crush at the Quarry House tavern in Silver Spring back on July 16. Their recordings are outstanding for the indie punk/pop vein. I put vocalist/guitarist Ali Lipman up there with Liz Phair, Colleen Green and Hana Eid. 

Unfortunately, they made the same mistake that other bands do at the Quarry, which is overwhelming the tiny space with their own PA, so the sound was muddy and dominated by the bottom frequencies. Sigh.

It looks like some people read this blog. I got this email: Good afternoon, folks at Thrift Bakery!

Thanks for the work you do with the blog, and also for your time. I'm reaching out to submit my band's brand new EP for your consideration of a review and/or blog post. Lucidhavoc is a new underground cinematic rock/alt metal project with heavy influence from Starset and Breaking Benjamin. We would be grateful and honored if you checked out our debut EP 'Chasms' at your convenience!

LucidHavoc is in the industrial-metal-goth rock space, with a tiny bit of screamo. It caught my attention because like acts such as Muse or Amy Lee's work in Evanesence, you can hear the lyrics. I would call it dramatic rather than cinematic. After a bunch of songs I was wondering “what is this group going to do next?” You won't be bored.

It wasn't your daddy's niteclub. The Stone Circle Theatre is a converted church in the Ridgewood section of Queens, accessible by the L train. Acoustically, these spaces can be dicey, with sound bouncing all over, but the team at this community venue had it under control.

I had been invited up to the city by my daughter for the weekend. She needed a night to chill and I was stoked to see Babehoven, who traveled down from Hudson, N.Y. 

There were pews on the sides and chairs stacked in the corner and I asked a young lady if she wanted one. Pearl and I began chatting and she immediately pegged me as someone in a band, which I described – our history and where we were from. 

She had seen Babehoven before and asked my favorite songs. Umm, “Life In Art” with Squirrel Flower, “Dizzy Spin,” “Lasagna.” We traded names of similar bands and she told me to check into Florry. 

Carol, a traditional acoustic artist accompanies by an electric guitarist and cello/banjo player, opened the show with about seven songs. She sings staight-up earnest folk music that I liked and respected.

Babehoven is fronted by songwriter Maya Bon, who played keyboards, with collaborator Ryan Albert, who is able to make a lot of sound with little effort on guitar.

They did not play my favorites, but they did do “Blue Around You,” and maybe “I'm On Your Team.” But perhaps I am imagining it among the five numbers. 

Maya teared up when she related a recent health issue that might have prevented her from performing. The kicker was that even at less than 100%, she is still an outstanding vocalist whose recordings don't do her justice. For being able to express from the diaphragm, she was among the best I have ever heard. 

They closed with the Rolling Stones' “Wild Horses,” inviting Carol and Dimitri of HJOL up on stage. 

HJOL stands for Horse Jumper of Love, the solo act of Dimitri Giannopoulos. I'm not always much for slow tempo sad dude music but he grew on me, becoming more existential through his seven tunes. I liked “April's Daughter” and “Car Crash Lullaby.” 

All these acts incorporated finger picking so I hope I am learning something about guitar playing.

Pearl and I swapped more names of bands and confirmed how much we appreciated Babehoven, but I was thirsting for more of their music. 

Attendance was maybe 100. I never told Pearl the name of my band and left happy with my self restraint. 

I’ve waited to hear Lisa Cerbone since 1995. That was the year Bob Hair signed me up for the CMJ sampler and I got a CD in the mail every month. 

The wait was worth it. She sang and played for two solid hours at the Three Whistles coffeehouse in Arlington, Virginia, on August 7. 

I felt I was seeing and hearing a lifetime of experience with her acoustic set.  

To call her songs folk music does not give them their due. Cerbone dispenses with structural hooks of commercial music and relies on her consistently bright soprano and guitar dexterity.  

Me, I just amazed at someone who can sing while playing up to the 15^th fret like she can.

She seems to have recorded more with electric instruments early in her career, and some of those songs lean to the fun side. Her recent work leans to the quiet side, like Written in the Stars and Tomorrow from the album We Still Have Sky.

Love Grows Slow is an arresting electric guitar song from the album Ordinary Days that I will play again.

Loss is a theme of modern acoustic music and Cerbone explores the territory. 

Her performance is somewhat comparable to the songs of Natalie Jane Hill or Aimee Mann, but two octaves higher. 

Cerbone is Baltimore-based so those of you in the DMV will have opportunities to see her. 

This song is about navigating your day with style.

We were at the peak of our performing prowess as a foursome in 1990.
